Nebraska-based folk artist Andrea von Kampen's recently-released song "Before I Buy A Gun" is a thoughtful piece that draws attention to overwhelming issues facing American society today. With haunting melodies and nuanced lyrics to promote a sense of compassion and unity while still standing for justice in a time where tensions are high, the cover artwork needed to match the work's raw tone, blatant title, and strong message.

A Simple Statement

When first envisioning the direction for the cover, Andrea knew she wanted the artwork to include an element that could stand on its own, and that it should draw influence from organic shapes and natural textures. The title of the release being what it is, of course, a first thought would be some sort of design featuring a gun – but was a gun something that would resonate with listeners? Would it catch the right kind of attention? Was that "too much"?

We got to work with this in mind and studied the lyrics, the style, the piece as a whole. The lyrics gave us a wide variety of ideas, some pretty abstract and others more obvious. We iterated a bit on some different concepts, and worked up a few ideas. We were stoked when it was decided the version featuring a gun, upside down, on its own, was the one spoke the loudest.
